Centre for Trades Education and Innovation CTEI at Camosun College

Work done with B+H Architects

This exciting project redefines the Camosun College's Interurban Campus, increase the visibility and profile of trades education and innovation, and become a centre for campus activities and events. This new 80,000 sf contemporary facility is built to LEED Gold standards and includes a new central Student Commons atrium that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration among the different trades - offering a unique location for College and industry special events, while maintaining and improving opportunities for participation by people underrepresented in the trades. The complex is consistent with future Campus Planning with a direct pedestrian link that connects the new building to existing trades facilities, the Campus Centre, and transportation hub. CTEI also consists of a new 45,000 square foot Marine Trades Centre facility and a new 35,000 square foot Mechanical Trades Centre Facility.

As I stood under the vast overhang, directly under the impressive wood beams, I could not help but feel a sense of the immense, perhaps similar to what shipbuilders may have felt hundreds of years ago in the Orient, Europe, or early North America, standing under a ship's wooden bow or bowsprit. I could only smile at the feeling of pride that the trades persons who worked on this project must feel for this treasure.

This is truly a showcase site and I am proud to be able to see it's evolution in my days at Camosun.
